BALLAD Poem: There is no You and I, only Me and Thee, by Austin Thomas Rietsch

(together)
Me don’t know why
Me going to cry a lot more than thee
Thee know that
Me told Thee this a million times
Thee go into a room
When Thee walk into it
Me never seen anything like it
People are different around thee
Me know this
They are funnier
They are happier
And they are slower to judge other people
They are slower to judge Me and Thee
And thee don’t even know
Thee are doing it
Thee change people just by being there
With Me

(apart)
How dare thee
Tell Me Thee has changed
Me is Different now
Thee is not
Thee is wanting to be
Thee is trying
And Me sees that
But
If Thee don’t see that
Then Me can’t do this anymore

(till death)
Me remember the first time
I met Thee
at a gathering
Me was bored
Me was lonely
Me was judged
Me watched everyone in the room
And then Me saw Thee
Thee ignored Me
Thee went outside to take a picture of the window
Where the others stood without Me
And while Me avoided Thee the entire evening
Me stepped close enough for Thee to see Me behind the others
Me was in the picture Thee took
Then Me left
Later
Me and Thee got together
There was a woman with a dog
Me wanted a dog
Thee asked to take a picture with the woman’s dog
That was the first picture

Of Me and Thee together
Although Me favorite picture
Was that of Me
Without Thee in it
That picture remains to be my favorite
Because Thee took it
And that was when Thee first lay eyes on Me
