FREE VERSE Poem: SUNSET PROMISES, by JOY KENDI

Your smile and laughter
Bright up your face
Coffee brown eyes during sunset
With a promise of eternity

I would dance with my left feet
The countless times we had to bandage your toes
I would have danced less…..
And let you read me to sleep often

You loved teasing
To think that I hate you a bit today than yesterday
I always question your promise
Eternity was a well-crafted lie you told
Right love?

I will wait for you
I know you are waiting for me
Right love?

How is the afterlife
Would you still recognize me
Old and grey
I still knit and read
But I would take up fencing
Challenge the Grim Reaper
To buy us a story on eternity

I’m watching the sunset
And
Today I missed our museum strolls
How your cheeks turned pink when I teased
How you snorted when you lied
I smiled a little harder today
