In Darkness
In an impoverished cruel world she walks,
Forcing a moonshine smile that hides stifled searing tears.
Choking back she integrates with a soulless community, Altruism is a myth and disappointment reigns supreme.
In silent moments behind closed doors she lets blood, Beating the walls to release the pain burning inside.
Fighting the two persons struggling in her clouded mind, Both alone even without each-other screaming to belong.
To love, to live, to be loved and escape the desolation, Which stings more each long thunderous day.
Like a poisoned dog she prays the inexplicable pain would stop, As times rolls on so too does her sad swim into despair.
Her cries lost in the darkness until one grim night The numbness sets in, zombiefied the blood flows, And an endless sleep consumes.
Now stands an ironic memorial in her name, It reads beloved wife and daughter,
Yet…

I LIKE YOU by Gabrielle Lanzona
I’m not even going to say it explicitly in this passage
because you can’t get any more explicit than a title
Even so, caps lock and in italics
boldfaced and screaming at you across Broadway
a three-story marquee
flashing lights blaring loud noises
you still wouldn’t know it.
That’s alright
It’s a good thing
really.
Who am I kidding
Do you ever wanna slap someone with a fish because dear lord they’re so beautiful and they don’t even know it
because they’re so strange and irreverent and wonderfully bizarre
in a world where everything is flat and grey
and when they laugh it’s with no sense of any self-consciousness whatsoever
too hard and too loud
when they talk about something they really get into it
such passion and such detail
as if…

I’ve got to win by Sonya Marshall
I’ve got to win.
This is bigger than me, so I’ve got to win.
I’m in last place…
the course lasts a lifetime…but I have no time.
This is bigger than me, so I’ve got to win.
My opponents are quick…doubt, fear, anger, sadness…
the list goes on…they have a game plan too…
they stick together, blocking my way.
This is bigger than me, so I’ve got to win.
My feet can’t keep up the pace, so I stumble and fall…
I lay there in tears…got to get back in the race…
my opponents taunt me, keeping me down…
If I lose this race, I will fail.
This is bigger than me, so I’ve got to win.
A hand reaches down to me…I take hold to pull myself up…
On my feet, I hear a whisper in my ear…
“Never Give…

CORN TREE
By: Habib Akewusola & Habeeb Whyte
Framing riot,
Impunity on display
Well dressed scarecrow or idols.
Nothing changes
Just faces on currency
Just smiles on fiction
Forced unity,
Forced livelihood amidst agony
Germination of multiple fertile seeds
On a soil I never own nor farm on.
He breaths, for free,
Whose fighting for we?
Albeit, we gave him freedom
Institute of korrupt
By force avenging a curse,
Lick my feet!
The uncommanded commander beckons,
My brother, endure, or you comot, shikena..
Media doesn’t sleep.
As korrupt fights back,
Tricks, venue a battle field,
Casualty are her avid readers
Dead is a believer.
Hope is buried.
So did my corn tree,
Never sight shores of a fertile island
She never grew to glory
The farming masters deemed so….

Ground Zero
by, Melissa R. Mendelson
The subway rocks me asleep,
and I forget.
The city streets shake with noise,
and a million footsteps thunder
against concrete.
And I become lost.
Time ticks by,
and everyone is on schedule.
Nothing breaks their routine,
but I pause.
I stop to remember
what took place
so long ago,
and I see yesterday
standing there
with tears falling against darkness.
And I remember the wave of emotion
that gripped me,
that threatened to drown me,
but I rode those waves
with my pen.
And the city became alive once more,
and we walk a million moments
of our lives,
alive.
But do we still remember,
or is it easy to
forget?

Tom Cat by Barbara Anderson
As a child I loved to play, with the cats at home,
especially the ones that played with me all day long.
One day I was outside playing, when a Tom Cat
happened to stroll my way, “tom cat would you like to
play with me,” and this is what he said.
“I am Tom Cat and as you
know we’re wild as can be.
But for you my girl, since
you love us so much, I’ll
try to control myself.
I like to roam the
streets at night and
especially the alley, but
you my girl have to stay at
home so this is what I’ll do.
I’ll play with you in the day time when your parents
are at home. But be careful my girl, that you do not tell
them, that I’m not a domesticated cat.”
The little girl laughed…

The Soundtrack to Your First Embrace
You fold your arms around her
With a whisper of wings,
Your breath in her ear
Like sea in a shell, washing
A distant shore and yet so near.
Your heart gallops,
A startled stallion
Running for cover,
Unsure of your lover,
Holding her with bones that creak
Like sails on a galleon.
Clothes rustle
As your fingers brush her face
In your first embrace.
