Performed by Marsha Mason

7 questions with the poet:

1) What is the theme of your poem?

The theme of my poem is the lack of compassion people have one for another.

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

When people read my poem or watch my poetry reading, I’d like for them to honestly survey themselves, and ask the question, “Am I compassionate?”. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world.” Kindness is contagious and humility will take you a long way in life.

3) How long have you been writing poetry?

I’ve been writing poems since 2001. Writing poems became another way for me to express my feelings.

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

My favorite poet and author is Maya Angelou. I call myself “Young Maya” at times, because her works has truly inspires and encourages me to keep reaching for the stars, which without a doubt makes her a mother to many daughters, though she birthed none. Each line of one of my personal favorites, “Letter To My Daughter”, felt as though they were written just for me. She was phenomenal and I only wish to be as inspiring as she was, even if just a little bit.

5) What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

There’s so much going wrong in the world, and so many, including children are suffering, but most of us are busy with our own lives to care. I jumped at the opportunity to submit my poem in hopes that it would make others think about it too, just as I have thought about it. And prayerfully, it would change someone’s mind for the betterment of this world and everyone living in it.

6) Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I am also a Singer-Songwriter and Designer. I write short stories and I am currently working on a poetry book and novel.

7) What is your passion in life?

Apart from music and art, my passion is helping others, especially those less fortunate than myself.

No place to sleep, no bread to eat
Dragging her feet through the cars of the train,
In an awkward run, begs for change to maintain

THE HEARTLESS AND THE HOMELESS
By: Carlyn Soulei Thomas

Homeless woman on the street
No place to sleep, no bread to eat
Dragging her feet through the cars of the train,
In an awkward run, begs for change to maintain

Poverty knows no color, no creed
Still the rich wants more, beyond what they need
While the poor, still poorer
Prays for the day they’ll get over

Such a disgrace, such a shame
And I’m partly to blame

See, I’ve been those staring eyes
Those friendly smiles in disguise,
While disgusted, I’m feeling inside
As they pass, my legs pull aside
Hold my breath,
While fighting the urge to get upset

Deep inside, I’ve been unkind
Though to lend a hand, I never mind
Human nature? Or just plain immature?
Still the matter at hand,
Crucial, but buried beneath the sand

Take a minute to listen and you’ll understand

The world is like Jack and Jill
And almost everything is treated with a pill
Society has a lot of missing screws
Recession has everyone singing the blues
The freedom to choose has been abused
And now we live in a world confused

Still day after day I aim to change,
Though obstacles hit at every range

Kindness is contagious
But hand in hand goes no further than being written on pages
Current events are more and more outrageous
Are you brave enough to face it?

“A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions and the roots spring up and make new trees.”
-Amelia Earhart
