Read Poem: the fall of Lilith, by Tova Beck-Friedman

ode to patriarchy

according to old Jewish myths –
Eve was Adam’s second wife —
his first was Lilith

it happened in the distant past
before the Biblical story
of creation was conceived —

in the original story
Adam & Lilith
were created equal
molded of the same soil —

while she insisted on co-equality
in every aspect of life
inclusive of conjugal love
he was not sure
this arrangement suited him

perhaps her desire
to care for her needs
contributed to her downfall
perhaps Adam’s insecurities
were her undoing

details are hard to come by —
what we do know is that to pave
the way for another
— more docile wife
the story had to change
thus the teller of tales
shattered Lilith reputation
demonized and transformed
her into bête noir
— a succubus
