Watch THE DROWNING, 140 Character Short Story:

Get to know writer Catherine Bain:

1) What is your very short story about?

It’s a fanciful short think about how humans and nature interact which started with me wondering about when willows first started to weep.

2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

I went to see a new production of Hamlet recently and was struck anew by Ophelia’s story. The idea about the watery willow came to me in the theatre and then I recalled reading earlier submissions on your website a few days earlier.

3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?

For many reasons I never tire of ‘Tess’, Roman Polanski’s version of Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy.

Get to know writer Christina Black:

1) What is your very short story about?

The story is about love and how hard is to enjoy love.

2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

While straight myself, a family member is struggling with her identity for as long as I can remember. I wanted to write something that would show that struggle and how, sometimes, love is not enough.

3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Probably The Silence of the Lambs. I was 10 when the movie came out and didn’t watch it until years later, but I was impressed with the script and acting enough to watch it every time it was on the tv. Even now, despite having the DVD, it’s one of the few movies that I will sit…

Consequence of lying, Twitter Short Story by Marcus Ako

Watch CONSEQUENCE OF LYING, Twitter Short Story:

Get to know writer Marcus Ako:

1) What is your very short story about?

CONSEQUENCE OF LYING looks at the repercussion of fibbing on a cv, something most of us have done at least once. Someone lies about being colour-blind. Now they need to diffuse a bomb.

2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

I heard about the festival and felt the challenge to tell an entire story in 140 characters. So many ideas flooded my tiny brain but converting them into that limited space was tough. The punchline hit me first, then I worked backwards to make the story work.

3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? I have seen that movie – no lie – 50 times. I know all the songs and all the…

    Watch SHOES, Twitter Short Story:

Get to know writer Joe Lunne:

1) What is your very short story about?

It’s about a woman finally leaving a hopeless situation.

2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

I’ve always thought that a movie opening with a woman loading all of her shoes into a convertible and then driving away to start a new life would be a great way to start a movie. Still fleshing out the script for that idea, but when I heard about the Twitter Short Story contest, I felt it would be a good challenge to parse the narrative down to 140 characters.

3) What movie have you seen the most in your life?

I watch The Big Lebowski a couple times a year. Chinatown, Brazil, and Raising Arizona are others I watch regularly. Wild Tales will be added to this…

Watch RINGSTONE, 140 Character Short Story:

Get to know writer Katie Sandberg:

1) What is your very short story about?

I knew that to connect with readers, there would have to be a universal theme, or at least a cliche, that could flash brightly. I chose mystery for the genre – maybe because I was in the midst of a Longmire binge on Netflix. So I typed a moment that might grab any of us in the amygdala.

2) What motivated you to write this story and submit it to the festival?

I’ve made my living as a writer for a long time now, but it’s always been nonfiction: marketing, journalism and grant writing. I’m now doing grant writing 100%, so this was a delightful way to break up the finals week-style stress with some imaginative fun. What a great concept you’ve developed!
