Poetry: THE LONE WOLF by Sebastian Arenas

 Genre: dark/sad/pain/love

Hungry and alone the lone wolf hides.
His love fled as she lied even as he tried to be at her sides.
Wounded he licks away the blood,
Now the dark surrounds him as he sinks in the mud.

Pure tenacity allows him to survive.
Pure anger fuels his need to stay alive.
Purity of mind has now lost its shine.
Purity of heart no longer resides in his bloodline.

The cold gnaws at his bones,
Deep inside the void, pain wants to be known.
Unrelenting agony fills his howls.
Unrequited love manifests in his growls.

He lets it all out to the moon,
The only thing that sympathizes with his tune.
The lone wolf is always meant to die,
Yet this lone wolf is meant to defy.

Poetry: Otherness by Shirley Jones-Luke

 after Alex Dimitrov

We’re on the moon. Years ago, I knew I couldn’t
save anyone. Despite that news, I made sure that
I tried to save anyone thereafter. But it’s easier to say
it than to do it. The moon doesn’t love you. Without
anyone else, I am just a room devoid of life. It is almost
impossible to exist without deception. Do you love me?

I must tell you that I’ve failed at loving you. You wanted a
deep, passionate love from me, but I could not give it. I know
that people need to be loved. But right now, I see only hate. I hear
only hate. I feel hate growing in my heart. My country is confusing me.

Our money is not infinite like the oceans. But even oceans lose their currents. Water runs dry.
Banks fail. Our money is better off under a mattress. Besides, we don’t sleep in the same bed
anyone. We haven’t in years. I don’t miss the warmth of your body. It went cold when my heart
did.

We must refuse evil. We must not abandon our hearts. We must end the worst of life, the
debased, racists, religious terrorists and the elite. They exist because we allowed them to. They
exist without love. Their love is warped. But we aren’t pure either. There is still coal inside us
diamonds.

I wish this otherness would end. But there seems to be no ending. Our love struggles onward,
life support, breathing tube, ineffective medicines. Oceans are dying. The rich continue to get

richer. The poor labor with only love to sustain them. What will sustain us? Something beyond
this otherness.

Poetry: IT IS FINISHED by Gabriel Eziorobo

Genre: African leaders, Society, Political

They say it is finished
they say they will do us well
more than the colonial masters
of the past
that we don’t need to worry about anything
but learn how to be slaves.

They say it is finished
they made us believe
the things for the deaf people
they say we don’t need to worry about anything
but learn how to be deaf.

They say it is finished
they put us here in this paradise
which prison is better of
they say we don’t need to worry about anything
but learn how to be prisoners
hoping to be free someday.

Poetry Reading: Heaven Cried Too by Ty Davis

Poem performed by Elizabeth Rose Morriss

Get to know the poet:

What is the theme of your poem?

The theme of the poem is family/emotional.

What motivated you to write this poem?

The passing of my Grandmother in 2015. She passed a day after my birthday, February 26th. It rained that day and snowed a bit. Pretty much the whole week leading up to her funeral, the weather was like that. But the day of her funeral the sun was out. I guess she had a warm welcome that day.

How long have you been writing poetry?

This is really like the second poem I wrote. I not really a poet. I wrote a poem a little before that called “No More Mr. Nice Ty”, it was like the opening of a short script I wrote of the same title. I thought it was sorta wack though.

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would that be?

I’m not really trying to have dinner with a zombie, bro. I don’t know. Maybe the old Kanye.

What influenced you to submit to have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

I got email out of the blue about submitting a poem. This was like the only poem I’ve really had. I’m writer battling writer’s block right now. Maybe my Grandma and my fam that I named in the poem knew I needed some inspiration and trying to align the universe up for me.

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

Yeah, the short script I mentioned earlier. I’m working on a pilot and feature right now.

What is your passion in life?

Writing, storytelling , creating. Just being able to create characters and come up with storylines. It’s like having a whole universe in your head. Right now I’m just trying to figure how to get it out.

Poetry Reading: WORDS by Lawrence Klein

Poem performed by Elizabeth Rose Morriss

Get to know the poet:

What is the theme of your poem?

Empowering individuals to take control of themselves, to accomplish their goals. We all have that power, but unlike the simplest toy or device that we buy, WE do not come with an ‘Operators Manual’! This poem IS one, it reveals the simplicity of changing conciousness!

What motivated you to write this poem?

We have developed a powerful Smartphone Biofeedback instrument and I wrote the poem to explain how it can empower YOU!

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would that be?

What influenced you to submit to have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

While I can read my own poetry, I wondered what an actor could bring to it with their own interpretation of it!

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

Yes, I wrote a Children’s Book – “Jacque the Lumberjack”, I wrote decades ago and is about to be published!

I have just started to Write a Book on Elite Sport Psychology, and my Forty Three Years Work with Olympic and Professional Athletes with the Mind Over Muscle Program I co-authored with Major Nory Laderoute, former Athletic Director of the Canadian Armed Forces Combat Training Center. It reveals the Power of Your Mind, to every individual – and how you can simply “Take Charge of Yourself”!

Poetry Reading: King Cormac, by Inis L. Fal

Performed by Val Cole

Get to know the poet:

What is the theme of your poem?

The theme of my poem is about an ancient king of Ireland named Cormac, who reigned for forty years and was renowned as both a brave and honorable king, and beloved among his loyal friends and subjects. Story tells that at some time King Cormac turned away from the pagan deities prevalent in ancient Ireland, and became a Christian, for which he was hated by the heathen Druids and priests. My poem is woven around that story, from the perspective of a modern admirer, and one who aspires to the same destiny of leading an honorable and courageous life.

What motivated you to write this poem?

The courage and dignity with which this King of Ireland both reigned his people and lived his own life inspired me to write this poem.

How long have you been writing poetry?

I suppose you could say I have been writing poetry all my life, though the occasions may have sometimes been few and far between 🙂

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would that be?

If I could sit down and have dinner with one person, I think it would be Princess Tamar (Tea) Tephi, another fascinating historical figure from ancient Ireland, who was very similar to King Cormac in that she, too, had a Judeo-Christian faith, though she was brought up with it and did not have to ‘convert’ as it were.

What influenced you to submit to have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

I decided to participate in this contest for two reasons: one being that this poem is very near and dear to my heart, and I would like to share it with others. The other reason is that this poem will also be featured in my upcoming historical-fiction, adventure novel ‘The Kurgan’s Secret: Lost In The Kingdom of Moesia’, which I am planning to publish very soon, and I thought that having it performed by a professional actor would be a wonderful way to spread the word!

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

Yes, I write mostly historical-fiction adventure novels. I began writing my first book ‘When the Lion Roars’ when I was 17 years old, and self-published it 3 years later. I am currently preparing to publish the sequel, which I hope will eventually blossom into a 4-5 book series. I also occasionally write short stories and funny stories, which I share on goodreads.com.

What is your passion in life?

Probably the most difficult question of all to answer succinctly, my passion in life as a writer is to make the past come to life before people’s eyes, and hopefully to inspire them with true history and what it means for all of us.
