Poetry Reading: What is Love, by Colin Guest

Performed by Amaka Umeh

POETRY 7 questions:

What is the theme of your poem?

Love.

What motivated you to write this poem?

My strong feelings of love for my wife.

How long have you been writing poetry?

I started writing poems back in 1983 while working in Brunei. I have recently written a number of love poems for my wife, with two of them in the final four in WildSound Poetry Festivals, with another of my poems that Julian Ford read out online, in the final four.

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would that be?

I think due to my love of writing, it would Le Child, whose writing I think is in a class of its own.

What influenced you to submit to have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

I think the words in my poem would appeal to many people, especially those who do not know the difference between love and desire. Also, by having my poem read out live, it acts to give more publicity to my writing endeavours.

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I have written and had published two short fiction books, plus one re my life in Turkey where I have lived for over 25 years, and a memoir entitled Follow in the Tigerman’s Footsteps. This covers my working as an expat for nineteen years in fifteen countries spread throughout the Middle, Far East and North Africa. In conjunction with Voyage Media who think my memoir could be used as the basis for a television series, I have written a pitch, which is on a list that Voyage sends out to over 6,000 producers to see if one is interested in using it.

At present, Julian Ford, one of your readers is working on turning my memoir into an audio book. I am presently writing a novel, and had over 14 articles published in online magazines, and one published in a UK expat magazine. I also took part in a live radio show in America re my writing.

What is your passion in life?

My passion is writing and hoping that one day I might have one of my books used as the basis for a film.

Poetry Reading: Vanquished by Melissa R Mendelson

Performed by Val Cole

POETRY 7 questions:

What is the theme of your poem?

I try not to make a habit on writing about war, but sometimes I can’t turn a blind eye on what it does to us, inspiring me then to create poems such as Vanquished.

What motivated you to write this poem?

I have a drawer filled with old, either printed out or handwritten poems, and Vanquished was one of them. Most of the poems in this drawer have a date on them, but Vanquished does not. I know that I wrote this poem after 9/11, maybe even after Desert Storm, and I also know that something on the news triggered something deep within me to write it.

How long have you been writing poetry?

The thought of writing poetry never crossed my mind until the seventh grade, where two creative writing teachers encouraged me to start doing so, and in the beginning, they were small. But over the years, they have become a voice that brings out all that I have buried deep inside.

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would that be?

Edgar Allan Poe

What influenced you to submit to have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

My poetry speaks to me when I write it, but once written, its voice might go unheard unless captured by someone, who can echo those words.

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I recently finished writing my first Horror/Sci-Fi Novel, Lizardian, which can be found as an E-book on Amazon Kindle, and I have begun drafting my next novel, Darkness Dreams, which will be Mystery/Suspense.

What is your passion in life?

Writing.

Poetry Reading: Encounter in Santa Chiara by LindaAnn Lo Schiavo

Performed by Val Cole

POETRY 7 questions:

What is the theme of your poem?

The theme is temptation.

What motivated you to write this poem?

I was writing a suite of poems set in Italy, which included some on Italian saints, and then I felt one poem should take the reader inside a famous church.

How long have you been writing poetry?

My first poem was published when I was nine years old. My first play for the stage was written at 9, too.

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would that be?

Geoffrey Chaucer — because I wrote my Masters thesis on his narrative poems.

What influenced you to submit to have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

I am a produced playwright so I work with actors all the time.

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

Yes, I am a journalist and a dramatist. Additionally, I’ve written short stories, radio dramas, and I’m working on a screenplay.

What is your passion in life?

Picking up a pen and applying the nib to a blank page.

A trace of dreams
© Jan. 9th, 2017 Dora Marii

Let’s see… what did twenty-sixteen
Have in store for me?
This plane of existence caught your attention
There’s massive need for intervention

Dreams keep coming want to get real,
In the sleepless nights, that’s how they feel
January stirred the fantasy so bad
Got you twistin’ turning in your bed

“Joy of my Soul! I feel such consolation
In you – by You!” Soulmate’s incantation
Woke you up, you’ve felt the Love
He’s been offering from above.

“Let’s do something, let’s meet”,
You’ve heard the Calling so sweet,
“I love you” was the shy rebound,
Putting light around like a gown.

What shall I do? Seeking for guidance
See him worried about the encounter,
“I’d better stop, I’ve been drinking!”
“Look after yourself”- you’ve been thinking.

Until you made your mind an Obeyer
Of the higher Soul mind’s, a prayer,
All thoughts vanished in a vroom
And so peaceful was your morning room!

What If?, Poetry by Cindi Walton

Genre: Rhyme, Family Fantasy

—–

What if for a moment in time
I could go back to childhood where everything rhymed
Where silly cats sat on a broom
and mysteries surrounded King Tut and his tomb
Where magical fairies were real as could be
seen through the eyes of anyone three
Where the greatest delight on a warm summer’s day
was cherry Kool-aid and the cold sprinkler’s spray
Where trees were castles that one must defend
with knee scabs and bruises for mother to tend
Clouds became monkeys and stars with the moon
were watched eating ice cream dripping from spoons
Where bedtime hugs made everyone safe
and kisses on cheeks, sunburned and chafed
Where rules were in place to keep order and peace
served up with French fries dripping in grease
Boundaries for safety, yet freedom to roam
all in the backyard of that place I called home
Thank God for the memories that live in my mind
that take me back to a moment in time
(Cindi Walton 2017)

Lost, Poetry by Grim Angel

 Genre: Pain, Hurt
—–

Bloodied and blistered are my feet walking a path of
stone, glass, and hot coals.
Wondering when a straight and narrow path turned
worst for the trek towards my goals.

Twists and turns lead to a forever path
of confusion, sorrow, and pain.
Lost. I’m no longer confident in
the things I want to gain.

Always was one good with directions
and was certain of her way.
Till the wrong turn at a fork in the road
led me astray.

Obstacles were always easy to overcome,
except this one. I’m lost.
Now I have no confidence in defeating
any impediment I cross.

Gazes towards the sky hoping He
would answer my cry for help.
In the end there is no answer.
I’ll have to find a way myself.

Demons of self-ridicule, doubt, and hate
ride my back.
On this journey to finding the right path,
I’m always under attack.

Still beaten and bloodied
I move forward to an unforeseen goal.
Hoping that these hardships and
demons aren’t consuming my soul.
