SLYME – Poetry Reading by Michelle Assor

SLYME by Michelle Assor

POETRY 7 questions:

What is the theme of your poem?

In this particular contest, contestants were asked to write a poem about ‘Society’.

I think the title of my poem ‘Slyme’ says it all. With the use of satiric humor and rhyme (Dr. Seuss’ style), the central message in my poem ‘Slyme’ is the inevitable human defeat in the race against time and technology. The poem also reflects our degenerative, dystopian society. Yet no matter how disturbing or how sad, one has to look at the realities of our society with humor. I use the word ‘Slyme’ and ‘Slime’ simultaneously to create an impact both visually and mentally.

How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I would love people to roar with laughter but to also discern the hidden meanings in the poem.

How long have you been writing poetry?

I started writing poetry at the age of eleven.

Do you have a favorite poet?

The brilliant poet, storyteller and illustrator, Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) inspired me to write the poem ‘Slyme’. I grew up on Dr. Seuss books and I admire his zany, nonsense words and his insatiable rhymes. Under the surface of his works there is deep meaning and he conveys this so artfully.

One of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes:
“Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

When poetry is read aloud and expressively, it resonates as opposed to silent reading. I am so impressed with the theatrical talent of Wildsound’s professional actors.

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I write novels, short stories and poems. I have written the first book of a trilogy and I am busy writing the second. Aside from the trilogy, I have several new books mapped out in my head I want to write a play too. I have attempted a one page screenplay and although I prefer to be a novelist, perhaps I will be brazen and write a full length screenplay one day.

What is your passion in life?

To defeat time and to be immortal.

POETRY 7 questions:

What is the theme of your poem?

The uselessness of war.

How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I have come to learn that each individual can read into my poem something very different than the original thought. It would be nice if people took enough time to thinks before they acted with abuse, rage, revenge or giving up hope.

How long have you been writing poetry?

You asking how old I am? Since I figures out in high school that my English teachers thought it harder to write a one page poem that a one page composition and gave higher marks for my effort

Do you have a favorite poet?

Bit eclectic with all my reading. But like The Raven Edgar Allan Poe. Gave me the nudge to write longer poems

What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

The genre DARK

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

Yes, Songs (on iTunes) Novels, short stories, scripts. Did not find out until a few years ago that you are not supposed to be able to write all those as well as many different genre. Though i don’t so pink and fluffy

What is your passion in life?

Writing, reading, writing, photography, Writing.

Society Poetry: SLYME by Michelle B. Assor

SLYME by Michelle B. Assor

Prime Time!
No time to dawdle or rhyme.
No time to swish this ghastly mite.
No time to flowingly write.
Camera lenses ogle
through the dark eyes of the iPad.
Beware roaming pens…..
You will be chomped and your ink run dry
Bet you didn’t know devices bite like mites.
Slyme!
Pens prepare for your finale.
No more writing rights!

No time to listen to melodic chimes.
Free time demands a puny dime.
Flat faced phones are advanced.
C’mon they are not that smart,
but they sure know how to keep
blushing face to face conversations
woolly worlds apart.

Spaced out…..
Slyme!
Where am I? Mars or the Moon?
Earth is too flat. I’d rather be as high as a kite
Yet I’ve forgotten how to climb a tree to take flight
If time permits I’ll slink the clock,
forego my stinky socks
and try to hurdle that trunk.
I’m salivating for that slimy lime
dangling high from a branch
on some wayward, distant ranch.
It’s begging me,
Be mine, be mine,
Slyme!
No time.

No time to reinvent the mime,
No time to whisper in your ear
“Be my Valentine”
Daytime-Lunchtime-Bedtime
It’s all the same suppressing chime
There is no half time, part time,
Only foolish fulltime

The cat is no longer in his hat
He doesn’t purr
And he’s losing his fur
Who, Who, WHO is Horton?
Looks like his trunk
is severely shortened.
Oh, but I do have one special wish
Yuck, no it’s not a slimy fish
I want that grimy, green grinch
The one who stole Christmas.
He ought to mind his own business.
SLYME!

The grimy, green grinch

I WAS FINE AS MARGARITA by Gloria D. Gonsalves

I was fine as a wallflower
creating words
in apolitical world.

I rhymed innocence
of my dwellings.
I weaved songs
of many sunnier smiles.

I was love blended
with verses of sunny centres
and new beginnings.

I had no race.
I had no religion.
I had no status.

I was simply Margarita, or
Daisy.

Then I was plucked
and got flung
into a political world.

Now I am something else.

I am slogans.
I am hashtags.
I am protests.

Sometimes
I recall old self
and wave with love.

Most times
I wish they saw me
as day’s eye, or
the beginning of hope.

Society Poetry: Consumer by Jeremy Duhart

Consumer

I want it all, goods and services. Money’s not a problem, I’m excited when purchasing. On the internet stores I stay surfing looking for the product to make my life perfect. There’s always something to buy to fix all of my prefects and defects, just need a 16 digit card number and an address for FedEx. I’m looking for value not trying to give it. I want it in seconds, too long is a minute. Sacrifice my rent payment for some reckless spending. Can’t get my mind off that new product, it’s addicting. That ad I just saw definitely has me influenced. Can’t wait to exchange this old thing for the newest. The coolest gadgets and fashion are waiting in my wish list. I’m in line online looking for my next wish. Spent hours shopping from home. Don’t cook, don’t clean, the DIY movement is wrong. I have a life full of improvement via products I’m consuming.

Too hot
Language has transformed from spoken to virtual.
Words now less spoken than texted with emojis.
Smiling faces looking at screens not seeing
what lies underneath their walking feet.
Dirt roads made into concrete constructing
freeways until they are complete.
Skyscrapers and buildings our ancestors wouldn’t recognize.
Mass creation on a scale not imagined by past lives.
Simulation of all things moving closer to perfection.
Or an illusion so good we delude ourselves into satisfaction.
The drive for knowledge and relaxation is the sponsor for robotics.
Creativity advocated by heavy usage of hallucinogens and narcotics. Development is going so fast the future can’t brace enough.
Are we coming in too hot?

Khwajah Piruz, Poetry by Renkian Barrymore

Genre: Religion

Khwajah Piruz by Renkian Barrymore

Many of you don’t know me.
My name is Khwajah Piruz.
Mazdayasnian Fire Keeper,
The herald delivering Nowruz.

Cleanness rebuffs all evil.
Purge the home, paint the walls, spruce the garden.
‘Khane Tekani’ is essential –
And annual visitations common.

They nourish the growth of your sabzeh,
That slept during cold winter days.
Now lentils, barley and wheat abounding,
Your ancestors’ wishes purveyed.

It’s Khwajah Piruz, only one day a year,
Everyone knows, I know as well.
I bring good news, Nowruz is near,
Siyâhi-e to az man, zardi-e man az to.

Many of you don’t know me,
My name is Khwajah Piruz.
Khwajah is Lord, Piruz victorious,
The herald delivering Nowruz.

I probably came from Mogadishu,
Though this is not the mainstream view.
Marauding Arabs conquered the Persians,
Then changed my name to ‘Hajji Firuz.’

Don’t confuse me with Bilal al Rabah,
The Meccan, the black muzzein.
My origins are rooted in Persia,
The ‘Tepe’ bears testament to my name.

It’s Khwajah Piruz, only one day a year,
Everyone knows, I know as well.
I bring good news, Nowruz is near,
Siyâhi-e to az man, zardi-e man az to.

Blackface is soot from the fire,
Or when I ascend from the dead.
Even a slave from Zanzibar –
But why not Prince Siyavash instead?

Status demeaned I no longer am
Considered ‘Victorious Lord’.
They converted me into a minstrel,
To play ‘saz’ and sing silly songs.

Look at me Lord, it’s been a while.
Do me a favour,
My very own Lord, the billy goat –
Why don’t you smile my Lord?

It’s Khwajah Piruz, only one day a year
Everyone knows, I know as well.
I bring good news, Nowruz is near
Siyâhi-e to az man, zardi-e man az to.

The children adore me, adults laugh,
Shiny coins swell my felted hat –
No more than a raucous spectacle –
How I yearn for the distant past.

A Fire Priest hostile to Daevas –
Zartosht’s appointed muzzein.
Homage bellowed through Asha-filled streets,
Reciting from memory, praying for the Dīn.

Dank areas lit up by the magi flame,
People of all ages came,
Confessing debts, rejecting authority,
The lawless, the wicked, the foulest beings.

Now look at me now Lord, it’s been a while.
Do me a favour,
My very own Lord, the billy goat –
Why don’t’ you smile my Lord?

Society Poetry: SHACKLES OF LIFE by Lois Terrans Bradbury

SHACKLES OF LIFE

by Lois Terrans Bradbury

The shackles of life can tear the flesh.

Cut deep.

Silence the heart and suffocate the soul,

crush the spirit and drown all hope,

bury the love and hobble expectation,

chill the laughter and boil the hate,

twist the mind and steal imagination.

The wound goes so deep,

the scars never heal.

Memories shadowed in darkness,

fighting to be seen,

dreams shattered,

never to be born.

Cries of desperation choked,

never to be heard.

And the blood of the innocent spilled,

never to be loved.

The turbulence echoes like a maddening menace,

consuming any flame that dares to dance,

chasing any joy that wished to flee,

imprisoning thoughts that struggle to be free.

The undercurrent too strong,

the sands of life vanish,

songs of love are erased.

Passion is tormented,

tenderness is broken.

Music’s magic touch gone forever.

Eternity to be wrapped in blankets of pain.

Forever sorrow to reign.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS by Marcus J. King http://www.infamouskalel.wordpress.com

Get to know the poet:

1) What is the theme of your poetry collection?

The theme of the poem is a maze to get out of “something”

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I would love for people to think about the direction they are going in and when they get to the ending, laugh, and go back and decide if they actually made a wrong turn.

3) How long have you been writing poetry?

I have been writing poetry for about 3 years now.

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

My favorite poet is Thomas Hardy; Having to do a essay on him opened my eyes to poetry and the different depth it can go.

5) What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

I was browsing some other writers work on WordPress.com Reader. They use a feature called recommended blogs that to relate to mine. I stumbled upon WILDsound and I wanted to reach more people to be noticed in the writing community.

6) Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

My other works are fiction; 2 novels; 1 of them is soon to be published in 2017; short stories; and of course poetry. I am getting into memoirs as well.

Fuck Up – Poetry Reading by Keshia L. Nowden

Watch the August 2016 Poetry Reading.

FUCK UP by Keshia L. Nowden:

Performed by actor Becky Shrimpton

Get to know the poet:

1) What is the theme of your poetry collection?

That is a good question, mostly because I didn’t have a theme in mind at the time I wrote it, it was more getting something off my chest! In fact, I was surprised my poem was even selected, considering I wrote the poem in 2 hours…with a glass of wine, so the theme is one of shock! Seriously, the tone and theme of the poem is dealing with failure in life, struggling with inferiority and self-esteem.

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

Since poetry is subjective, I’m sure some will view this poem with anger, sadness, insight or delight. The most important thing I’d like people to take away from this is that we all screw up, it’s the process of life, but we can learn from our screw-ups, even if it takes this life or the next.

3) How long have you been writing poetry?

Believe it or not, only a few months. I never saw myself as a poet, I write mostly fiction, horror, and sci-fi specifically, and, on occasion, comedy.

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

I have several: John Keats is one of my favorites, I was exposed to his work in college. I also love Maya Angelou, Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni. In terms in terms of lyrical poetry, Alicia Keys, Bob Dylan, Serge Gainsbourg, and the late, great David Bowie and Prince. They’ve all been a huge influence on my writing.

5) What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

I did it based on the advice of a friend of mine (whom I hope doesn’t mind me mentioning her name), Tina Thompson, who encouraged me to get my writing out there instead of sitting around waiting for success to come to me. Had Tina not told me what I already knew, yet unwilling to believe, I would still be sitting there wondering “what if?” Thank you for kicking my patootie in the right direction, Tina!
Shameless plug: you can find Tina’s talented self as @alwayswriteTina on Twitter!

6) Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I am in the process of finishing revisions on four stories I’ve written for two anthologies I am going to be featured in this year. The first anthology are reboots of classic myths, folktales and legends. The second anthology, entitled “Human,” explores the human condition, and how we deal with loss, rejection, happiness, anger, etc. I am trying to work on a horror novel, one I started last November for National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short.

7) What is your passion in life?

I love writing, and I want my writing to reflect my successes and failures, and how each obstacle I’ve faced has only made me stronger as a result. Plus, I want to see my brilliant, if a bit Mad Hatter-esque, work brought to life as crappy film/TV adaptations! I mean, really, isn’t that what writers live for?*

*Sarcasm totally intended!
