North of Tombstone, 3 A M – Poetry Reading by Doug Stanfield

Watch the poetry reading performed by Val Cole.

NORTH OF TOMBSTONE, 3AM  by Doug Stanfield:

Get to know the poet:

1) What is the theme of your poem?

How a harsh land shapes the people who survive its challenges. In this case, it is the desert along the Mexican border in Arizona.

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I would hope the reader will get a feeling for how life at the margins might be for ordinary people, and for the law of unintended consequences. I hope this piece will allow for some empathy for those who know how to survive.

3) How long have you been writing poetry?

For a little over two years. I had a career as a writer for about 35 years, mostly in journalism (newspapers)

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

I have two or three favorites, actually. My first is Carl Sandburg but lately I’ve been reading the excellent work of Jim Harrison and the North Carolina writer named Sheri Smith. I think my favorites tend to be for those who write more in the narrative style, almost prose, but not quite. And I like those who have a basic affection for our common humanity, rather than those who moan about things too much.

5) What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

You mean besides the ego trip? ?

6) Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I’m working on a novel, mystery, with lots of sex.

7) What is your passion in life?

At my, age waking up every day is all the passion I need. I figure if I wake up then everything else is irrelevant, and I try to have the best time I can.

Watch a June 2016 Poetry Performance Reading.

THE HEARTLESS AND THE HOMELESS by Carlyn Soulei Thomas

Performed by Marsha Mason

7 questions with the poet:

1) What is the theme of your poem?

The theme of my poem is the lack of compassion people have one for another.

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

When people read my poem or watch my poetry reading, I’d like for them to honestly survey themselves, and ask the question, “Am I compassionate?”. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world.” Kindness is contagious and humility will take you a long way in life.

3) How long have you been writing poetry?

I’ve been writing poems since 2001. Writing poems became another way for me to express my feelings.

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

My favorite poet and author is Maya Angelou. I call myself “Young Maya” at times, because her works has truly inspires and encourages me to keep reaching for the stars, which without a doubt makes her a mother to many daughters, though she birthed none. Each line of one of my personal favorites, “Letter To My Daughter”, felt as though they were written just for me. She was phenomenal and I only wish to be as inspiring as she was, even if just a little bit.

5) What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

There’s so much going wrong in the world, and so many, including children are suffering, but most of us are busy with our own lives to care. I jumped at the opportunity to submit my poem in hopes that it would make others think about it too, just as I have thought about it. And prayerfully, it would change someone’s mind for the betterment of this world and everyone living in it.

6) Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I am also a Singer-Songwriter and Designer. I write short stories and I am currently working on a poetry book and novel.

7) What is your passion in life?

Apart from music and art, my passion is helping others, especially those less fortunate than myself.

Dear Bully: A Collection of Poems about Bullying, Poetry by Joyce Fields

Dear Bully:
We forgive you for the hurt that you’ve caused,
For the pain and the terror you’ve brought us.
Some good has come from your horrible ways
Because, Dear Bully, you’ve taught us
How not to treat others, how not to act
How not to cause others to fear us.

Dear Bully: A Collection of Poems about Bullying
by Joyce Fields

Dear Bully:
We forgive you for the hurt that you’ve caused,
For the pain and the terror you’ve brought us.
Some good has come from your horrible ways
Because, Dear Bully, you’ve taught us
How not to treat others, how not to act
How not to cause others to fear us.
God is watching, Dear Bully,
And we truly want Him to cheer us.
We’ll remember to use the Golden Rule
And be kind and respectful to others
Because, even though we’re all different,
We all are sisters and brothers.
So your power to make us tremble, Dear Bully,
That power is being taken
And soon, very soon, Dear Bully,
To a new day we’ll awaken.
We hope that you will join us,
Making this world a better place.
We’ll stand shoulder to shoulder together,
And we’ll surely win the race!
