Office Politics, Poetry by Luke Wilson Lucas

Genre: Life, Work

Office Politics by Luke Wilson Lucas

Luz let me listen to her son’s message,
A brief statement of his arrival: “Mami, soy yo…”
The rest lost in a gargle of argot and elisions,
And her eyes crinkled with delight at my puzzlement—
To my ear it could have been Cantonese.

This during a time, between her fourth and her fifth husband,
When I read out loud to her, some of Garcia Marquez,
When she would patiently correct my pronunciation,
Telling me the meaning of certain words,
Digressing at times to personal associations…

Like when she and one other girl stole into the convent garment room,
Rummaged among the clothing, first swathing their torsos,
In long, running girdles, then donning the tunics, scapulars, coifs…
And looking at themselves in a swivel mirror,
Hugging each other with mocking astonishment,
Before sliding out of the habits to slip away undiscovered.

Luz was at the convent school to age 14,
Stolen from her mother,
As Luz told my wife,
Old maid aunts disapproved of her mother,
And after her father died of political wounds,
They took her,

Just as after Luz’s first divorce,
With the irony, the rhyme of history,
Her Colombian husband took her two babes,
Though in their twenties, they returned to her,
Carlos the message maker first, and then Matilda,

On her first day with her mother, Matilda sat in my office,
Waiting, crying, while I read from “Cien Anos de Soledad.”
Although I saw her from time to time,
Matilda never sat in my office again.

The winter when I read to Luz,
The light would be gone by the end of the day.
Sometimes I would accompany her to her car,
Sometimes I would hold her arm as we traversed the icy walk,
Lightly, to hold her up, just for balance, providing support,
But not too much.

The theme of my poem is to address the role of poet in society juxtaposed and compared to that of the role of a conventional 9-5 worker.

I like people to respond with their chosen responses. I believe my words are thought provoking enough for everyone to have their own say about them.

I started writing poetry as a child. I had a passion for poetry at school. I would say my first memorable poem was when I was 13.

Do you have a favorite poet?

I have favourite poets: Sylvia Plath, J. H. Prynne, and last but by no means least is my muse and mentor in spirit the great Russian Revolutionary Poet, Vladimir Mayakovsky.

What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

My influence to submit to Wildsound was/is the fact that you’re receptive to all themes, styles, genres etc. I like to bring my poetry to the world in radical ways that defy the normal, routine poetry styles. I respect the past but I like to chop down the laurels people lean on with a poetic scythe and make the way clear for more radical thinkers. Wildsound like my poetry with music and sound effects and I am very honoured to have already one short film produced for my poem “Hammer” in 2015.

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I have written short stories in the past. I have ideas for a stage play, screenplay and a poetry collection ready for release in hardback, paperback, e-book on 11/11/16 and an audio book to follow shortly after. I will be writing a new collection of poetry soon.

What is your passion in life?

What is my passion in life? POETRY. Poetry means more to me than life itself! I always say: “Did you know a poet can die of a lack of exposure? it comes with a WARNING: POETRY KILLS”

SLYME – Poetry Reading by Michelle Assor

Poetry performed by actor Kaleb Alexander

SLYME by Michelle Assor

POETRY 7 questions:

What is the theme of your poem?

In this particular contest, contestants were asked to write a poem about ‘Society’.

I think the title of my poem ‘Slyme’ says it all. With the use of satiric humor and rhyme (Dr. Seuss’ style), the central message in my poem ‘Slyme’ is the inevitable human defeat in the race against time and technology. The poem also reflects our degenerative, dystopian society. Yet no matter how disturbing or how sad, one has to look at the realities of our society with humor. I use the word ‘Slyme’ and ‘Slime’ simultaneously to create an impact both visually and mentally.

How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I would love people to roar with laughter but to also discern the hidden meanings in the poem.

How long have you been writing poetry?

I started writing poetry at the age of eleven.

Do you have a favorite poet?

The brilliant poet, storyteller and illustrator, Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) inspired me to write the poem ‘Slyme’. I grew up on Dr. Seuss books and I admire his zany, nonsense words and his insatiable rhymes. Under the surface of his works there is deep meaning and he conveys this so artfully.

One of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes:
“Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

When poetry is read aloud and expressively, it resonates as opposed to silent reading. I am so impressed with the theatrical talent of Wildsound’s professional actors.

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I write novels, short stories and poems. I have written the first book of a trilogy and I am busy writing the second. Aside from the trilogy, I have several new books mapped out in my head I want to write a play too. I have attempted a one page screenplay and although I prefer to be a novelist, perhaps I will be brazen and write a full length screenplay one day.

What is your passion in life?

To defeat time and to be immortal.

One Last Day, Poetry by Barbara Hunt

One Last Day by Barbara Hunt

Never enough time to say goodbye
Walking through this life unaware of how fast it flies
People in and out never seem to stay and slowly start to fade away
Simplicity evaporates as light begins to dissipate
Purity replaced by death and troubled times
Within the blink of an eye your life is slowly going out
Life is to short to sit and sweat the small stuff
Now it’s time to say goodbye your life flashes you by
There’s only one  thing left to say and that’s to enjoy everyday

“Questions” by Anne-Sophie Cabaret

Set my body free
I wasnt born for you to think
You can make fun of me
Just because you’re my mother
does not mean i aint got no rights
While you’re wasting your life
I got other battles to fight
And i am not your slave
No im a human being
My brain’s 50% unrealistic dreams
I live in the future
Think about that too much
What should i do before i die
And can we be reborn ?
A hell of a question
Will it ever be solved ?
How can we know its fake
If it never happened before ?
I got a lot of questions
And way too many plans
So i hope you get out of my life before i make mine end.

THE DEAD, Poetry by Lekan Malik

Genre: Society

THE DEAD

Oh callous generation
That would not even allow the dead to rest peacefully
In there sweet dark grave.
Now, they party on us,
They sit on us to gossip.
Our graves are now meeting places
For secret lovers, even at nights, without fear
Their children now excrete on our dusty faces
And also quench our thirst with their acidic urine.
They cover us with their stinky rags
And also lampooned our epitaphs.
They show us no respect, no fear.
They don’t pay us homage again.
Our protection don’t count anymore
Yet, they call us wastes.
We too have silent talks down here
But they distract us by throwing phlegm.
They turn our graves into beds
By spreading their bed bug infested mattresses.
They brood and fart expressly into our decayed mouths.
This age evicts us anyhow
As they greedily exhume us
And transfer us from grave to grave.
Or leave us there
For the government to lay roads like mats
For their vehicles
To accelerate on our decomposed bellies.

Our World, Poetry by Roderick Dupree

Genre: Society

Our World by Roderick Dupree

Looking left all my brothers turned thugs

Looking right my sisters sexing for love

Look up praying for change amongst us

Look down hoping the message was received from above

I see the same problems everyday

Violence

Envy

Gossip

Hate

A boy being a man before understanding his own way

A girl being a woman for confidence outside her doorway

Equals another soul taken before their birthday

I’ve seen days darken in the time of sunshine

I’ve seen dreams disappear at a point in time

Leaders promising followers a sure prize

Reality hitting followers with a surprise

Call upon the protect and serve to survive

Protect our rights when they decide

Serve our calling in disguise

Crucified for looking guilty because of my roots history

Only God can judge me but the gavel says differently

The circle of death continues

Different people

Same murders

New venues

Everyday life of new issues

Same book

Different chapters

Never ending sequels

Dreams of our world being saved

For staged opportunities for change

As we all once prayed

Living life through venegenance

As redemption feeds our heart engine’s

We want change

But never in attendance

When, Poetry by Abdulkadir Abdulrahim

Genre: Relationship

When

We have been waiting,
Since when we know nothing
When we cannot even figure out what is wrong,
When we did not know whom to sue.

We have being waiting,
Watching and wondering…
About when are we going to change
And when is the game going to be over.

We kept quite
Seeing innocents’ life being quitted.
Seeing our children becoming orphan,
Also our young women becoming widow.

We kept quite
Closely end our finger as we bite.
Tolerating misconduct in the society,
As the government say nothing.

Please tell me…

When are we going to inhale the fresh air?
When are we going to stop having nightmare?
When are going stop seeing our vanished innocent brothers?

We lived under the umbrella of brotherhood
Different religion, different culture.
Rich and poor as well.

Yet nor peace alive,
Oh we need some ease,
Please let us breathe,
Please, please.
…please
