1963 and Me by Latonia Sears

POETRY 7 questions:

What is the theme of your poem?

Due to the racially motivated hate and hurt going around. I began to think about what it was like when I came into this world. Today’s problems give me memory of that time.

How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I would hope and believe that each person can take something they can incorporate into their everyday lives. To actually think about it.

How long have you been writing poetry?

I have been writing poetry since 1998 which would give me18 years just writing poetry.

Do you have a favorite poet?

My favorite poet will always be Maya Angelou. Very strong voice and individual who gave this world a lot.

What influenced you to submit to WILDsound and have your poetry performed by a professional actor?

I really respect and appreciate Wildsound and the Poetry Festival. This really helps to showcase you as a poet or writer. It is truly a blessing for me.

Do you write other works? scripts? Short Stories? Etc..?

I wrote a play, 2 novels, poems, quotes. short stories, would like to try greeting cards. I have dreamed of writing a movie. There is a lot I could dabble in as a writer and poet.

What is your passion in life?

Writing is something I truly love and plan to excel in the future if I continue to run after it.

These Shoes – Poetry Reading by Latonia Sears

It came to me that people judge from a outward observation of another human being. Instead of finding out who that person really is inside and out. I think everyone has worth I don’t care what their circumstances are at that moment of our encounter.

1) What is the theme of your poem?

It came to me that people judge from a outward observation of another human being. Instead of finding out who that person really is inside and out. I think everyone has worth I don’t care what their circumstances are at that moment of our encounter.

2) How would you like people to respond when they read or watch your poetry reading?

I would like for them to be inspired and think about how a person can be looked down on because of his appearance. Or because he is not what some would consider something special in this world.

6 years

4) Do you have a favorite poet?

These Are The Times by Latonia Sears

So many in debt and

so many others going under

these are the times that make

us think which make us wonder

About the things we can’t change

everything is so different these days

really looks and sounds strange

These are the times when your every day

has become so fast paced

can’t slow down for this thing

we call the rat race

I can just imagine the stories you

have heard around town, on the news,

on the corner or even in the schools

These are the times

when we must stick together

break bread and say

a prayer with one another

Stop hurting start hugging

join hands and do something

stand beside each other

you know like brothers

Yes these are the times

that turn mice into men

and foe into friend

So what will we do

where will we go

don’t you know?

Time is ticking

while days are passing

make a decision

no more guessing

These are the times

not to run and hide

stand up be brave

show some pride

Yes these are the times

when “We The People”

have to make a change

and get on the bus

Remember these are the times

when you need to participate

because after all aren’t you

a part of this place?

These Shoes, by Latonia Sears

Most of the time people see you without knowing
What is really on your mind
making comments about the shoes you wear
because they are torn a leaning to the side
Laughing saying how they would not be caught dead in
raggedy shoes such as these

These Shoes
by Latonia Sears

Most of the time people see you without knowing
What is really on your mind
making comments about the shoes you wear
because they are torn a leaning to the side
Laughing saying how they would not be caught dead in
raggedy shoes such as these
although for you it is a blessing for you
to have these shoes on your feet
For not everyone can wear these shoes
they are yours and fit you just right
the appearance of these shoes should be the last thing
on your mind while you have them in your sight
Just to walk in someone else’s shoes is extraordinarily in itself
history onfirms that so many have tried and failed
In these shoes you can walk life’s path
looking through some else ‘s eyes
It is not an easy task to see
another’s hopes and dreams
their beginnings and endings
and how they paid the price
Everyone’s shoes have walked a different path
some have strolled the red carpet while others
have walked through fire and glass
Although to each it was never a bother
Exactly like Jesus Christ and the shoes he wore
which made him destined to walk on water
All I am saying is shoes are shoes
no matter what style or size
It is the feet in the shoes that make the difference
Even if they are tired and ugly inside
So the next time just stop that person and
ask them where those shoes have taken them in life
and if you actually stop and talk to them
you can see their whole story
from the expression in their eyes
